Things I've learnt raising a child and an email marketing company

My eldest child, Amy, turned 18 a couple of weeks ago.

Merrehill also turns 18 later this year.

And as I'm always on the hunt for good blog fodder, it got me thinking...

Parenting and raising kids is similar to running an email campaign

(I know, it isn't at all, but I've put effort into this one so bear with me)

If you look close, there are some surprisingly funny similarities between the two.

1. Sleepless Nights

As any parent will tell you, sleepless nights are an essential part of the job.

And as any marketer will tell you, sending promotional emails at odd hours of the night is also part of the game.

So, whether you're up late with a crying baby or sending emails to an international audience, you're bound to have some sleepless nights.

2. Repeating Yourself

As a parent, you find yourself repeating the same phrases over and over again.

"Don't touch that!" "Stop hitting your brother!"

Similarly, as a marketer, you might find yourself sending the same message over and over again in your promotional emails.

"Buy now!" "Limited time offer!"

It can get monotonous, but it's all part of the job.

3. Making Connections

As a parent, you're always looking to make connections with other parents and caregivers.

As a marketer, you're always looking to make connections with potential customers.

Both require networking skills and the ability to form relationships that can benefit you in the long run.

4. Testing Boundaries

As any parent of a toddler will tell you, testing boundaries is a daily occurrence.

And as a marketer, testing the boundaries of your email campaigns is essential.

You need to experiment with subject lines, send times, and content to see what works and what doesn't.

5. Unpredictability

Finally, both parenting and promotional email campaigns can be incredibly unpredictable.

Just when you think you have everything under control, something unexpected happens.

A child gets sick, a promotion email bombs, and you're left scrambling to fix things.
